Review – Escape Cape Ann
Finding activities that can lure two tech‑loving teenagers away from their screens is no small feat, so discovering the outdoor escape rooms felt like striking gold. It offered the perfect compromise: they could use an iPad and still get outside to explore Rockport.
What Is Escape Cape Ann?
Escape Cape Ann is an outdoor escape room adventure. Similar to traditional escape rooms, a small group of individuals are posed a series of sequential challenges. The sequential challenges serve as part of completing a larger objective, usually escaping a room that you are trapped in (hence the clever title of “escape room”). How does this concept transcend in the outdoors? The play space is larger obviously (usually within a few blocks of the starting point) and the clues are fed to you via an iPad that serves as your virtual guide. Complementing your iPad is a briefcase, full of items that “may or may not” be essential for solving various puzzles along your journey.
Where Do You Start?
Escape Cape Ann is the brainchild of North Shore Adventures (9 Tuna Wharf, Rockport, MA). Ironically known for their bike and kayak rentals, Escape Cape Ann was launched in 2025 as an added family activity.

How Long Does It Take?
The entire experience took about three hours, which felt just right—long enough to be immersive, but not so long that attention spans or energy levels started to fade. Full disclosure, that three hour did include about a 20-minute detour of shopping for an impromptu sweatshirt due to us choosing to participate on a bit of a cooler day.
Our Experience
We chose Operation Mindfall, which turned out to be the ideal difficulty level for our trio—especially considering we’ve never actually completed an escape room on time (we’ve come close… but close doesn’t count). The puzzles were engaging without being overwhelming, and each solved clue led us to a new spot around the Bearskin Neck area. We loved that many of the stops were tucked away from the busiest foot traffic, giving us fresh perspectives of the town while avoiding the crowds. For example, we quest took us behind(!) Motif 1.

The staff were incredibly friendly and made sure we understood how everything worked before we set off, and even provided some needed tips on a few challenges along the way.
Overall, it was a creative, memorable way to blend tech, teamwork, and a bit of adventure. Even the teenagers approved.
